Original Penguin clothing started out in unconventionally in an old underwear factory in the States, in the 1950’s. The executives at the factory were looking for a new brand to compete with the likes of Lacoste, who was becoming more and more successful with their range of golf shirts. When salesman Abbot Pederson turned up with a fluffy penguin at a meeting in 1954 a new identity was adopted by the brand including a stunning new logo.

Original Penguin clothing became an instant hit when they introduced their first line of golf shirts; a revised design which featured an under-arm “action gusset” and the moving of the chest pocket to the right. To begin with, the brand was sponsored by people such as Bob Hope and Bing Crosby; however, the real endorsement came from pro golfers such as Arnold Palmer, Dow Finsterwald and Jack Burk Jr.

The second line of Original Penguin clothing saw the introduction of the bowling line which incorporated the signature penguin design with a bowling theme as well as updating the actual garment by revising the gusset. This also proved to be an instant success and brand exposure began to grow. Original Penguin clothing was now on roughly the same level as Lacoste who also had a substantial influence in the sports industry, particularly golf and tennis.

Since being taken over by Perry Ellis International in 1996, Original Penguin clothing has continued to assert itself as a pioneer in luxury, sports leisurewear bringing out a variety of different but consistent collections most seasons. Stocked in many upscale and dominant department and retail stores such as; Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's and Nordstrom, to name a few, the brand continues to present itself as a symbol of suburban leisure.

Original Penguin still remains effortlessly cool, with a preppy and retro-classic edge and their collection continues to grow, adapting to modern trends and fashions when necessary. Designed for people with a strong sense of fashion, style and humour, Original Penguin clothing helps to reflect a leisurely lifestyle with a modern twist. Although the brand has seen many changes since its conception in the 1950s, the vintage-inspired clothing has managed to stay true to its heritage and craftsmanship ensuring that it will always be recognised as an American classic.
